N-Heterocyclic Carbenes as Surface Functionalization Agents on Steels and Carbon Surfaces
N-Heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) have emerged as robust surface functionalization agents due to their strong binding affinity and ability to form highly stable carbon–metal bonds. Their tunable molecular structure and chemical stability make them ideal candidates for modifying material surfaces to enhance performance. This work investigates the controlled deposition and detailed surface characterization of NHC films on both mild steel and carbon surfaces. Two complementary deposition strategies are employed: self-assembly via immersion deposition and electrochemical deposition, with both methods systematically optimized to achieve improved deposition outcomes. The NHC-functionalized surfaces are characterized using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Mass Spectrometry (MALDI), Scanning Electron Microscopy–Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and Atomic Force Microscopy–Infrared Spectroscopy (AFM-IR).
